It is not to be confused with the Kanpo, the Japanese selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Summary The Japan in the OTI Festival, organized by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), is a non-national version of the Eurovision Song Contest and airs in Japan. It was first held in 1979, before moving to its current national format. The JBC usually sends teams to contests which they feel they have a good chance of winning, such as the OTI Festival, Nagoya OTI Festival and the Kanpo. Japan has always been a regular competitor in the OTI Festival, but only managed to win it once, in 1982, with "Namida no Tsuki" by Syun! Matsune. Japan also provided the winning song for the Kanpo in 1984. The final of the Japan in the OTI Festival has been split in the early years of the contest in two semi-finals. In 1983 and 1984, each semi-final saw ten songs being performed in a night with the two songs from each semi-final going through to the final. In 1985 a wildcard was introduced allowing one of the semi-final performances to go through to the final. Japan has been one of the most successful countries in the OTI Festival with most years sending their entry to the final and winning the contest three times, in 1982, 1984 and 1990. The last winner to win the contest twice was the popular band Saimin. In the early years of the JBC, some of the more successful artists sent their own versions of the OTI theme song to the national Kanpo contest, often resulting in two versions of a single song, with one going to the Kanpo and one going to the OTI Festival. The Japan in the OTI Festival is broadcast in Japan on the JBC, as well as on the Satellite network Super Channel and BS-i. It is often one of the most watched events on Japanese television. The current president of the Japan in the OTI Festival is Hideaki Ohyama and the current director is Hiroshi Yamasaki.
